Planning to PROPOSE in Seoul?

Everything You Need to Know Before Getting Down on One Knee:

A Secret Proposal Photographer’s Guide

Seoul is an incredible place to propose.

But planning a proposal in a city you've never visited can feel overwhelming.

Where do you go? When is the light best?

How do you keep it a secret and still get it all on camera?

I'm a Seoul-based photographer, and this guide walks you through all of it, so you can focus on the only thing that matters: the moment itself.

STEP 1

CHOOSE THE KIND OF PROPOSAL YOU WANT

BEFORE CHOOSING A LOCATION, THINK ABOUT THE ATMOSPHERE.

This is probably the part that makes people most nervous.

QUIET & INTIMATE

Not everyone wants an audience when they propose.

If that sounds like you, Seoul has plenty of calm places where it can be just the two of you.

Traditional courtyards:

Namsangol Hanok Village: Right at the foot of Namsan, with peaceful courtyards and a small pond at the back (Cheonghakji) that is much quieter than Bukchon.

Unhyeongung Palace: A small royal residence near Insadong that most visitors skip. Wooden corridors and inner courtyards give you a beautiful hanok backdrop without the crowds.

Green and open

Seoul Forest Park: The main lawns get busy, but the Metasequoia path and the wooded trails toward the east side are shaded and calm.

Seonyudo Park: A former water treatment plant on an island in the Han River, now covered in ivy and bamboo, with small decks looking out over the water.

Walks with a view

Namsan City Wall Trail: Skip the crowds at N Seoul Tower and follow the old stone wall instead. Early morning or late afternoon light is lovely here.

Naksan Park: Walk along the fortress wall at dusk and you get wide views of the city lights, with far fewer people than the big tourist viewpoints.

Couple in traditional Korean hanbok attire standing by a pond amid vibrant autumn foliage near a pagoda.

If you want your proposal to feel connected to where you are, a traditional setting is a beautiful choice.

You can also wear hanbok, traditional Korean dress. The clothes, the architecture and the Seoul scenery all become part of your story, and the proposal becomes a real memory of Korea, not just a nice backdrop.

Where to go

Changdeokgung Secret Garden (Huwon): Royal, peaceful and secluded. Forest paths, quiet lotus ponds and small pavilions where the royal family once relaxed.

Changgyeonggung Palace: Peaceful and romantic. Wooden halls, a quiet pond and soft late-afternoon light, with far fewer people than Gyeongbokgung.

Gyeonghuigung Palace: Calm and understated. One of the least visited palaces in Seoul, so you can often find a courtyard almost to yourselves.

Gyeongbokgung Palace: Grand and iconic. Wide stone courtyards, big gates and Gyeonghoeru Pavilion floating over the water.

Eunpyeong Hanok Village: Quiet and scenic. Restored tile-roofed houses with Bukhansan Mountain rising behind them.

SEASONAL HIGHTLIGHTS

Seoul changes a lot through the year, and the season you choose can shape the whole mood of your proposal.

Proposals by Season:

Spring (late March to mid May)

Cherry blossom season is short but magical. Soft pink and white everywhere, and a gentle, dreamy mood. Where? Seoul Forest, Seokchon Lake or Changgyeonggung Palace, where the blossoms frame the old wooden halls.

Summer (June to August)

Deep greens, misty mornings and long warm evenings with light until almost 8 PM. Where? The lotus pond at Gyeongbokgung's Hyangwonjeong Pavilion (lotus usually blooms in July and August), the shaded Metasequoia path in Seoul Forest or the walking trails of Namsan Park.

Autumn (early October to mid November)

My favorite season for proposals in Korea. Gold, amber and red everywhere, with warm light that makes every photo look cinematic. Where? The golden ginkgo trees along Deoksugung's Stone Wall Road, the maple trees at Changgyeonggung or Unhyeongung, or the silver grass at Haneul Park.

Winter (December to February)

After fresh snow, Seoul goes quiet. It feels cozy and intimate, and you get a side of Korea most tourists never see. Where? A snow-dusted courtyard at Eunpyeong Hanok Village, or the winter lights and ice rink at Seoul Plaza in the evening.

Couple enjoying a romantic city skyline view at dusk, with bokeh city lights and a colorful purple-pink sunset sky.

Neon Nights and Candlelit Dinners

If you love the idea of a late-night proposal, Seoul after dark is hard to beat.

build the evening around a great dinner or cocktails, then walk out into the neon lights of the city. The mood is warm, a little cinematic, and very romantic.

Romantic Restaurants & Nighttime Proposal Ideas

Euljiro dining bars and speakeasies: Moody, retro and tucked away. Look for a small bar hidden behind old printing shops in Euljiro 3-ga, with candlelight inside and colorful neon glowing through the windows. Propose at your corner table over dessert, or step out into the quiet retro alleys of Euljiro Nogari Alley right after dinner, while the excitement is still fresh.

Rooftop Dining & Wine Bars with City Skyline Views

Rooftop restaurants and wine bars: Elevated and sparkling. Book a rooftop in Seongsu, Itaewon or along the Han River, where soft table lights meet the glowing city below. Reserve around sunset so you catch blue hour near dessert, when the skyline looks its best.

A PLAN YOU DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT

BEFORE YOUR PROPOSAL, WE’LL GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER

FIRST, WE TALK

Before your proposal, we’ll have a short online meeting to get to know each other, talk through your ideas and understand what you have in mind.

Then I’ll take care of the details.

I’ll help you choose the right location and timing, taking into account your partner, the atmosphere you want and what will feel natural for the two of you.

THEN, YOU’LL KNOW EXACTLY WHAT TO DO

We’ll choose a primary proposal spot and a backup location. I’ll send you reference photos, a map pin and simple visual cues so you can find the spot easily.

On the day, you won’t need to remember a complicated sequence or keep checking your phone. We’ll have one simple cue that tells me you’re ready.

You just enjoy the moment. I’ll be ready.

I KNOW SEOUL.

I KNOW HOW TO MAKE IT FEEL EFFORTLESS.

I KNOW WHERE AND WHEN SEOUL FEELS ITS BEST

I live and work in Seoul, so I know which places are quiet at different times, where the sunset light falls beautifully and how to move through the city without drawing attention.

I’ll suggest a few carefully chosen locations based on your partner’s personality and the atmosphere you have in mind, then help you choose the moment when the light and surroundings are just right.

WHEN THE MOMENT COMES, I’LL DISAPPEAR INTO THE BACKGROUND

I’ll arrive ahead of you and blend into the surroundings, whether that means looking like another tourist, holding a coffee or photographing the landscape.

I’ll stay far enough away to keep the moment private, while positioning myself at exactly the right angle to capture your partner’s genuine reaction. You won’t need to look for me or make an obvious signal. A simple pause is enough for me to know you’re ready.

To your partner, it will feel completely spontaneous. You’ll simply be enjoying your time together in Seoul, and then you get down on one knee.

proposal on nami island

Nami Island is one of the most romantic locations for a proposal near Seoul, offering beautiful tree-lined paths, peaceful riverside views, and seasonal scenery. As a Nami Island proposal photographer, I love this location for its natural, cinematic atmosphere and the variety

of intimate spots available for a surprise proposal and couples portraits.

If you are looking for proposal photography in Seoul with a more natural and scenic setting,

a Nami Island proposal is a beautiful choice. Autumn is especially spectacular, with golden ginkgo trees and colourful foliage creating a memorable backdrop for your proposal photos.

proposal in Baekbeom plaza park

If you want a proposal with a beautiful Seoul backdrop without the crowds of the city’s most famous landmarks, Baekbeom Plaza Park is a wonderful choice.

Set on the slopes of Namsan, the park combines open green spaces, winding paths and panoramic views across Seoul. From here, you can see the city stretching out below.

For couples who want Seoul to be part of the story without the proposal feeling overly touristy, Baekbeom Plaza Park offers a lovely balance of nature, city views and intimacy.

Questions & Answers

Where will we meet before the proposal?

We’ll confirm a precise, easy-to-find meeting point nearby—such as a landmark entrance or a specific park gateway. Depending on the plan, you can either "accidentally" bump into me as a casual local photographer, or I’ll share live pin locations so you can walk to the spot while I track your arrival discreetly from a distance.

WHAT IF THE WEATHER ISN’T ON OUR SIDE?

Seoul’s weather can change quickly, so we’ll keep a second date available as a backup. If the forecast looks difficult, we can move your proposal and session in advance, giving us the best chance of beautiful light and a comfortable experience.

Where will you be waiting?

I’ll be in position ahead of time, blended into the background—looking like a regular tourist, holding a cup of coffee, or posing as a landscape photographer. I stay far enough away to keep the moment private, but positioned at the exact angle needed to capture their genuine reaction.

What happens immediately after the proposal?

Once they say yes, I’ll step back for a minute or two and give you space to take in those first moments together. From there, we’ll continue with

a relaxed engagement session, either 30 minutes or 1 hour depending on your package.

How do we naturally transition into our engagement photos?

No awkward resets or stiff posing. We ride the high of the proposal and start a relaxed, guided walk around the area. Because the secret is out, the energy is light, fun, and effortless—capturing raw laughter, ring shots, and candid interactions while the excitement is still fresh.
